  1. Hey, guys, I have a problem. I need a capture card that has no known compatibility problems under $200 and I NEED to use VDub to capture at 640x480 minimum. I got ATI TV Wonder to work under Win2k SP1 with VirtualDub. However, S-Video is dead and when I upgrade to Service Pack 3, I get blank screen. So now I need to look for a good card and I know that it can be a real hassle. That's why I am asking. Note that I do not need a DV card - analog (S-Video would be nice) and with no USB 1.0 interface (too slow).

Please look at my specs before advising; maybe you have a similar system. I appreciate any help, I really need it.

I’m currently using a Kworld DVD maker TV (aka. Provideo 256T). Even though this card is not good for Virtual Dub you could capture with its own software in MPEG1/2 at VCD, SVCD or DVD streams without loosing frames. It has its own MPEG2 hardware codec (Streamachine SM2210, know as cirrus logic CS92210). If you are into MPEG this is a very cost effective solution.

See this card at http://www.provideo.com.tw or http://www.kworld.com.tw

If you can find the Kword card, go to the Provideo site and download the drivers for the 256T as they are much better.

  3. Avermedia avertv. Use your sound card for sound. You will get great results with virtualdubvcr (virtualdub.net)... or "plain" virtualdub. Really, any bt8x8 card will do just fine. Oh, make sure you use the drivers from sourceforge. With that setup, my limitation is either the source, or the specs at which I'm encoding... Cheap too. (I mean, for 50$ or so, and the quality you'll get out of it... you just can't go wrong)

  4. Wow! I missed avertv. I am near J&R's offline location and they have it for $50. What a find. Tomorrow morning I will be in the area

  6. Ok, backtrack. I hear that hauppauge cards work with Win2K. No problems at all? At high resolution? If so, that's ultra cool. I checked out their site and it appears that my only budget choice is WinTV radio, since it is the only one with stereo support. Am I right?

Mine works great. I use the btwincap driver and can cap at 640x480 and even higher with no compression. Actually you can plug you audio source directly into your sound card and get stereo sound. If I remember correctly, the wintv radio was the cheapest to offer an S-video connector.

  8. Yes, S-Video is important - I have S-video setup. My cable box has it, so does my SVHS unit. I got the last one to get serious with video caps
    Thanks for the tips!
