I have never copied any movies before. I have however copied many music files and cds using roxio easy cd creator 5 basic. I am interested in buying a dvd-r drive so I can backup my dvd collection. However, I have heard that it is very difficult and time consuming.
I am looking for the easiest and fastest way to backup my dvds using a dvd-r drive. I am hoping to find a way to put my dvd into my dvd drive, and put a blank dvdr disc into my dvd-r drive and backup from one to the other. Is this possible? If so, any help would be much needed.
Also, what about encryption. Is there anything within the origonal dvd to stop anyone from backing it up? If so, how do you get around this?
Thanks a bunch

Very unlikely, unless the DVD is both under 4.3gb and unencrypteed already, possible I guess if someone writes the right tools but not likely and not very handy.
If you want to learn about copying DVDs I suggest starting here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=121195 -

It can be done fairly easily in most case but time consuming is the problem.. but if you set up 3 or 4 tasks at night and let your computer work while u sleep its no biggy.

Dont waste your money on a dvd drive and then a dvd-r drive. Chances are is that it won't work the same as having a cd-rom drive and a cd-r drive to burn audio/data discs.
Just get a dvd-r(w) drive and a large hard drive.
You'll rip the dvds to the hd first then back to dvd-r.
Sometimes you will have to encode to make it fit.
Its a headache, best of luck. -
the easiest way and by far the best I have seen is to use DVD2SVCD
many guides all over the place for how to use it
as for me, i use that program along with DVD Maestro and ifo update and chapter xtractor to make a backup of my DVD
and I am able to keep the original DVD Menu and Chapter Structure as well as all the extras -

I'd like to give you method a try, could you elaborate more on it?
I remember trying dvd2svcd once but all I got was a couple of bin/cue files. Burn discs had chapters but no menus. I'm curious. please tell! -
there is a guide on here, don't remember where, on how to use DVD2SVCD to create DVD's
i'm sure with a little searching like I did you can find it
