I plan to get a philips DVD793CH as soon as the local Best Buy gets some in stock. It is listed to play VCD and SVCD so that is good ( I really want CVD so time will tell). Its progressive scan and 5 disk changer so that is what I was looking for. $179
Not much info on this unit and none in the compatibility list yet.
I was hoping someone has this unit and could tell me if it is firmware upgradable should I need that feature (no Idea yet how to do it but will figure that out if need be).
Can it play CVD's?
Would be great If I could get some info on this unit even if the info is "stay away from this unit" best to learn from others.
I also see this unit listed as a DVD793C and DVD793CH I think they are the same just not sure. Looks like the CH stands for "changer".
Thanks ALL.

I sent an e-mail to philips about this unit just wanted to share the correspondence: Guess I wish the DVD793 had picture CD capability but my PC is fine for that I guess. They also did not answer the question on if it is firmware upgradable so I still would like to know. They did not answer either about CVD but not suprised but at least they sent a response.
Question for the experts here
Is the Picture CD capability a "firmware" feature or does this mean that in some way the OPTICS on this system are inferior to the DVD724 that so many like here. Why would they leave this feature out on a high end DVD changer is my concern
OK what I asked:
I am looking into Philips products since they seem to be of high quality
and can in many cases play CVD's and SCVD's. The model you make the
DVD724AT seems to be one of the highest rated for this purpose by many.
I am looking for a 3 or 5 disk unit that would work as well (possibly
the same optics and firmware)
The three I found made by you are the DVD782CH and the DVD783CH and the DVD793ch (probably this one is too expensive for me).
Might any of these be as good as the DVD724AT?
Many of the users talk about getting Firmware upgraded for some of
the units that enable them to run the CVD and SCVD format but I can
not see where on your site this is available. I did register for the
site but could not find this information.
Their response:
Our DVD793 is the closest match to our DVD724 unit, below I have provided the formats that they both plays.

The following are the features that differs our DVD724 from our DVD793 EXECPT for the disc tray.

Enhanced Parental Control with 120 Disc Lock
5 Disc Resume
High quality mirror finishing
