  1. I need to reduce my backup of Signs to fit on 1 DVD. I have been using the following method, DVDDecrypter -> IfoEdit -> Nero. I just want the movie. I need to reduce the file from 4.57 to 4.3 . I have read a lot of guides and now , I am completely confused. I am looking for the easiest way to reduce the size without loosing to much quality. Let me what you think, be nice this is my first post.

    Thank you.

or you can remove the end credits

since there is not much space needed you can reencode at a high bitrate

  4. I was able to remove the being & end credits to reduce it to 4.3GB . I used DVD2AVI to find the credits and did not select them under IfoEdit. I did try to reencode them with TMPGEnc on the NTSC DVD template at 4000, but was unable to get IfoEdit to remux the m2v and audio files. What is the best or easiest way for newbie to do it?

Thank you guys for helping me look outside the box.

1Badfish,,, Can you go into more details on how you used DVD2AVI to locate the begining part, like the studio logo, and how you located the ending credits. Did you find out what time stamp or chapter or sector they were located. Then how did you get rid of them in IFOedit.

You said you did not select them in IFOedit,... where you previewing the entire movie, how were you selecting them. IFOedit will strip out all the streams but only shows you VOB ID. The credits are in the last VOB and you have to be able to know which chapter that is,.. then you have to know how to strip it out...

I've had the same problem on several movies and have never found the answer. I've always ended up with 2 DVD's.

Hope you can add some info.

  6. I'm trying to do this exact same thing....make Signs smaller. This is my FIRST attempt at reencoding and it's driving me crazy!

I demuxed the audio and video from the signs dvd and have the .m2v and .ac3 (I plan on using maestro to compile the dvd).

I then open TMPGenc and run the wizard to try to lower the bitrate enough to fit on one dvd. The problem is when I get to the screen that allows me to change the bitrate it is only showing up as a .25MB file!?

Does TMPG not support mpeg2? It is the plus version.

This encoding process is driving me crazy. I just want a simple way to make the file size smaller!

What format does the video file need to be in order to encode this way?

  7. I use the giude at doom9.org "How to keep only the main movie of a DVD" and in Step 2: Analyze the structure of the DVD, tell how find the vts_01_x at are used in the movie. Hope this helps.

  8. 1badfish..if you already reencode your movie and you have an ac3 file and m2v file you can use that in spruce up .....like you said you only want the movie...

1Badfish, I was hoping you could provide some detailed information. I've been through that guide and it leaves out so many assusmptions, I can't follow it. It talks about information it gets out of the analysis, but there is no explanation of the analysis,...

Once the initial movie is stripped of everything except the main movie, and one english audio stream,... there is only one VOB id to look at. all that shows is chapters and cells,... How do I find out what is in each chapter... The guide says view them in preview, but only always shows the entire movie.

You have to be doing something more than what is in the guide... it sucks.
There are dozens of frustrated people trying to gather information out of this forum, and we hope that people like yourself, who have it working, will help us to the next step. I've been over the guide 10 times and still have learned nothing about getting ride of a studio Logo embedded in the main Video stream,... or even how to view it. If you could at least tell us that one point, then we could move on.

IF you don't know,... just say that,.... and we will look elsewhere.

Of course it does. That should be obvious from using the program. Follow the posted guides on how to configure.

  11. I will go home tonight and write down the steps needed to make a movie only backup of “Sign” on a 4.37 G DVD-R without reencoding. I hope to have it posted by Wednesday. I am new to all of this too, so be nice. :P

  12. Here is the method, I use to backup SIGNS (movie only) without reecoding.

1)Use DVDDecrypter in FILE MODE to backup your copy of “Signs” to the HD. This will take about 25 min depending on your computer.
2)Open DVD2AVI to load the Vob
3)F3 to OPEN, it will bring up the File List Menu and load up the Vob file that DVDdecrypter rid. Select the 1st Vob, this will automatically load all 5 of the VTS_01_X.Vob files.
    4)Click on OK
5)F5 to start reviewing the movie. The Statistics Window will appear once the move starts. The “Vob Cell ID” is what you are to look at. “Vob Cell ID” is 2 - 1 at the being, but once the actual move starts the “Vob Cell ID” is 3-1(this will take about 3 min to happen), so the Movie starts on Vob 3.
6)Press the Esc button to stop the Statistic Window review.
7)F3 to OPEN, it will bring up the File List Menu. Now you will delete VTS_01_ 1.vob through VTS_01_4.vob by highlighting and clicking on the DEL button. The only vob files left is VTS_01_5.vob.
    8)Click on OK
9)F5 to start reviewing the movie. The Statistics Window will appear once the move starts. The “Vob Cell ID” is what you are to look at, again. The being“Vob Cell ID” is 21 - 1, but at the end of the movie you will see “Vob Cell ID” is 23-1(this will take about 8 min to happen), so the Movie ends on Vob 23.
    10)Quite DVD2AVI
    11)Start IfoEdit
    12)Open the Signs vts_01_0.vob
13)Open VOB EXTRAS and select Remux.
14)I only change the left side of this options box. Check by the following options Strip Steam’s, Strip VOB ID’s, Correct Vob Unit, Correct Original IFO Files, auto copy menu file to destination, select a destination for the file and click OK
15)Select the English language unit, English subtitles and click on STRIP IT.
16)Now select the VOB files needed for the Movie. Put a check by 3 though 23.
17)Click on STRIP IT and once IfoEdit is do, you can burn it in Nero.

I hope this helps. I got all this information from vcdhelp.com, doom9.org, and IfoEdit Guide Index. I am a newbie at this, so be nice. This method worked for me on making a movie only backup of SIGNS without reencoding.

  13. Hey, you're a 'goodfish'.. good info for next time..

My 2nd attempt at backing up Signs (retaing main menu/xtras and movie) was, again, unsuccessful. I got the damned DVD-R (a cheap .80-cent Princo 1x) to FINALLy play on my Panasonic PV62.. everything worked fine, SAVE the damned movie --> VERY jerky, jumpy, skippy, sucky, etc..

I used CCE 2.64 and used an average bitrate of 3,800, min 2k, max9k, 2-pass.. Is this not correct? Or does the problem lay somewhere in processing my .d2v file with DVD2AVI??

After reading, I still am unsure of when to used 'Force FILM' (I'm doing all NTSC movies).. Anyone?
