having some problems w/ capture formats.. i want to capture in uncompressed avi so i can easily convert into divx. when i capture in uncompressed avi in 320x240 everything looks great but if i get any bigger (like 640x480 or larger), horizontal lines of distortion become visible when anything in the capture makes any amount of motion or movement. at first i thought this was b/c i needed to make the frame rate better (im using 29fps now). but just out of curiosity, i tried capturing in 640x480 in mpeg2 and no problems... what can i do or what settings can i correct to make my uncompressed avi captures free of those horizontal lines (of distortion)?
thanks so much

Horizontal lines of distorsion? Please describe better? Just sounds to me like you know now what interlaced means.

.. thats about the best i can do of describing it... its like you only have 1/4 lines horizontally and it only appears that way in something that is in motion... everything else looks normal. the distortion (as i said is only parts of the capture in motion.. the more the worse).. its like say there are 10 lines of horizontal lines and that makes up a perfect picture. the last an object is in the capture the more lines it loses of those 10 and the gaps are just blurred by the top line above it and below it. very hard to describe...

This is called interlaced video. You learned something today
This is the way all NTSC stuff you see everyday on TV really is...
Unrelated: my kids love this one too! -
ya but this doesn't happen when i capture in 340x280? and it doesnt do it when i capture in mpeg-2. i checked in my capture software and i noticed that "deinterlacing was selected for mpeg" ... anything like this available for an avi format? any push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
thanks so much

at 240 lines, you only capture one field, hence, no "lines". My opinion is, you want both, just deinterlace 'em. Bigger capture is usually better as it will give you better picture quality encodes. I don't know what you capture with, I use virtualdub with a mjpeg codec (sometimes huffyuv), and it gives great results. Good luck again

im playing around w/ captures using virtualdub... there are some filter options and such... so i feel im on the right track but im not sure what options i want to go w/. ive played w/ em for some time now and haven't ran into luck yet. anyone have any idea?

lol.. our replies were 2 seconds apart :P. he he. ya, now im playing around w/ virtualdub and am getting pretty used to it and such.. just don't know what options i want to go w/. but ya, my main interest is to get a capture thats better res then 320x240... im not getting to picky at this point - he he. ive been capturing in uncompressed avi and then later converting to divx just b/c i dont lose as many frames and things seem to be better quality when going that way (not sure if theres a better way to go w/ or not).. but my main interest is getting a res better then 320x240
thanks for all your quick feedback!
