Marjan,

Following are the things that I would consider. If you own a large High Definition TV (HDTV) or plan to buy one in the future, a progressive scan DVD player would have a better picture quality. On a regular TV, it wouldn't make any difference. Then the next decision is to buy a single disk player or a multi disk player. On this site I think I've seen Pioneer players recommended more than any other name brand players. Since I've a Pioneer A04 DVD burner, my preference would be for a Pioneer player. I'm currently considering a Pioneer DV 656A progressive scan player. It plays every kind of disk, including DVD-r and -RW. Also plays MP3 music recorded on DVD disks.

If you live in USA, you can find one at WalMart for $198. There is currently no hack available for it to make it region free. If you live in Europe, I saw some on the Internet advertised as region free.

I just replaced my old Apex AD-703 with a Pioneer DV-354. The picture quality is MUCH better on the Pioneer; you can see the difference even on my old 25" tv (the Apex had vertical lines that were most visible in dark scenes... it was related to how the decoder worked in sections I think).

Actually, I'm glad my new one is single disc - the apex took about 15 seconds before you could put a disc after turning on because it would rotate all the discs, stop, eject, rotate some more, and after you put in a disc it would do the reverse. My pioneer ejects very quickly.

The one thing I do miss is the 'jump to time' feature. Otherwise I'm glad I have a non-cheapo player now. It's possible that newer cheapo players are good now, but it's hard to sacrifice decoder quality for some of the irrelevant perks.

CDR and DVD-R support would be important in my book. Pioneer should always play DVD-R (since they invented it) but who knows about other ones. If the player has no reputation, and there's no information here, it's a crapshoot!

I don't know the difference between the DV 353 and 354. Walmart has the DV 353 on their website for $118.

Thorn, are you still having problems with DVD-r not playing when burnt by Nero? Have you used anything other than DVDit to burn?
