hi, I am a newbieand here is what I want to do. I want to rip a DVD and put it into Divx without loosing any quality. My plan is to build a small computer with a massive harddrive and just put all my dvd's into Divx. But I want to play the Divx files on my tv without noticing any quality differnce. I really don't care about the file size. Just QUALITY... I have read some guides, but I just want to know how to have the absolute best quality possible using divx.

This is probably the wrong forum to ask a question about DivX, you may find more help on the forum at this site www.divx-digest.com
I've ripped a lot of DivX files from DVD and in my experience you can get excellent results by using 2 cd's for typical movie (1400MB) especially if you want to preserve the 5.1 surround sound. At this file size the results are often difficult to distinguish from dvd.
I use Gordian Knot and DivX3 for my encoding, although as a beginner it may be easier to use Gordian and DivX5.
You also need a video card with a decent TV-OUT chip if you're planning to plug your pc into your tv for playback. Further details on this subject can be found here:

If size isn't a problem anyway then just rip the entire DVD to your drive and keep it in VOB format, that way you'll retain everything -

Of course encoding will mean a loss of quality, but a well-made DivX can surpass the best SVCD in terms of quality, and I would wager that most would be hard-pressed to distinguish the DivX played through their TV from a DVD, apart from the lack of surround sound.
I am talking about 1-disk rips (up to around 100 minutes) made using the pro deatures of DivX 5 (b-frames + GMC). (Or the latest XviD, for that matter) -
Not loosing quality, you'd have to copy the vob files. For really great quality DivX rips, use gordian knot and high enough bits/(pixel*frame) and you're set (still at a decent resolution). I use only B frames myself as I had some problems with GMC. You can also keep the AC3 if you wish, and also multiple audio streams... It's all up to you.
