I usually put things on 2 CDs with good quality. Whenever possible, use NTSCFilm instead of NTSC. Use 2-pass VBR and use a bitrate calculator to find the right average bitrate to exactly fill each CD. It's almost never worthwhile to reduce the audio bitrate below 224k, it won't improve your video enough to matter. If you want you can experiment with different people's SVCD templates, but I haven't seen any real difference from one to another.
It also depends on the material you're encoding. Low-action widescreen movies done with NTSCFilm can be done with over an hour on each CD without any major problems. Some high-action material almost can't be encoded at all to standard SVCD bitrates without noticable macroblocks. Also remember that quality is a subjective thing, people's opinions vary. -
I've seen some 4 CD SVCD Rips *cough* LOTR *cough*, and it's still not like the DVD...

Yes I was amazed the 1st time I did a test of a DVD rip to 2 SVCD discs using DVD2SVCD.
now I hope this DVD Burner stuff is up to what ever one says it is, cause I just ordered one, so far though, I have not seen anything that can beat the quality I get from my Panasonic DMR-E20 though. -
I don't have a nvidia card, and you should see the difference. VCD's are awful (by me), SVCD's watchable, but whatever I play (not rips from the net, which aren't really all that good to start with) from my computer looks really close to the DVD. Have yet to see something that gets closer to DVD like picture.
