I've managed to copy a DVD onto a DVD+RW (the DVD came free with my DVD burner) and I'm now trying to emulate this using the much cheaper DVD-R. I've had limited success, copying two films almost to the end - the quality is perfect, plays great on my stand alone player, but it cuts out around 20 mins or so before the end. I've bought two different types of unbranded discs, from two different suppliers, so it seems more likely that I'm doing something wrong...or is it? These films have been compressed etc and fitted on the DVD+RW, so it does seem odd that they wouldn't fit on the DVD-R...any suggestions?

your problem is cheap media. go buy a good dvd-r (go on, splurge!) and try it out. unfortunately there are some crappy discs out there that don't burn well all the way to the edge of the disc (when it is burned, it starts near the middle of the disc and burns out toward the edges). There aren't many, and a cheap price isn't always an indicator of cheap quality. do some shopping around and you'll learn by experience. even better, do a search on this forum....
