  1. I was wondering if someone could help me with this. I just purchased my first DV camcorder (JVC GR-DVL820)

I tried to convert my old HI-8mm tapes to DV by connecting A/V out from 8mm to A/V in on the DV.

I recorded it great. Even on the LCD of the DV cam it looks great. However, when I went to play it back into the preview window of Pinnacle or Avid Xpress DV I get a black vertical bar (not very big) on the left side of the video.

    Any ideas why??

    Thanks!!!

Do you see the bar on your normal DV tapes when connected to Pinnacle?

I'm not sure this would make a difference but is the sound recording on the camera selectable between 12-bit and 16-bit? If so, make sure you are on 16-bit.

  3. No, regular DV tapes play back perfectly. This is the only one that has the black bar.

Sound is set to 16 bit.

Thanks for the quick response erickb

Try rendering and burning (or returning to tape) a short clip of what you've captured. It may be that the bar is not visible on the TV (all edges of the video frame are cut off on the TV). My 8mm captures have a little jaggedy stuff along the bottom, but you can't see it on the final disc when shown on the tube.

  6. netwurk, the bar is "normal" in my experience and can be cropped out if you wish. Your TV's overscan takes care of it when you play it back on the TV. All my caps from my Hi8 cam have always had a couple columns-width of black on the left as well as several rows at the bottom due to head-swiching noise. I just ignore it since I author to DVD and watch on the TV, as I figure that cropping down from 480 lines and then resizing back up (for compliance) would monkey with the overall quality. I've found that a lot of videogame consoles have the same thing happen, and quite a few games let you move the image around on your TV screen to minimize it.
