Hi,
Does ripping dvd to vcd/svcd cause damage or have any ill effects on the hard drive or the system in general.
I have done a few vcd's and more recently a few svcd's using dvd2svcd.
I have had excellent results. I'm just curious as to whether anyone has had any problems.
TIA
Chris.

Any kind of high volume reading/writing puts wear on a hard drive, keep it cool (fan on drive) and you will extend the life of your drive significantly especially if it is 7200rpm or higher.

considering that all you are doing is writing files to your hard drive i would hardly say your damaging your HD. Now it may not last as long depending on how often your doing this.

I've noticed that combined read/write operations, especially fast ones like simple demuxing create a lot of drive activity and head noise. I've read that this can be hard on drives. I have no actual knowledge that, that is true. But I can say that operations like that seem to go a lot faster with a lot less fuss and noise on the part of the computer if you have the sorce file and target files on separate drives. Logically, it seems head seek times should be faster than going drive to drive, plus assuming efficient use of write buffers it doesn't seem it should matter much, but just in my experience it seems to.
