Is there an accepted comparison anywhere for Freeware burning tools or is it down to opinion/experience?

When it comes to freeware, we're pretty limited to cdrdao and cdrecord and the various fronts for these that exist. If you know what you're doing, I've personally found these to be at least as good as any commercial package out there, but since this is much related to taste, OS, hardware, media.... Any comparision would be pretty useless.
