  2. The KWAG templates are good for getting as much video as possible onto 1 CD. How many CD's are you trying to fit the movie on? I use 2 CD's for a SVCD encode from divx and i get fantastic quality. If i was trying to squuze it onto 1 disc though i would use VCD because of the lower resolution. Trying to fit a whole movie on 1 CD at SVCD resolution is going to give you some blockiness because the lower bitrate is not enough to support the higher resolution e.g. 352x240 compared to 480x480. SVCD has 2.72 x more pixels than a VCD. owever if you uxe KWAGS templates to fit on more than 1 CD you should get really good results. it all comes down to simple maths: resolution versus bitrate. And of course your own personal view on quality (which has been argued long and hard in these forums!!).

I personally would use virtualdub to extract the audio to an uncompressed wave file, then use TMPEG to encode the avi and the wave to a SVCD standard MPEG 2 file. Work out the average bitrate for the length of the movie using 2 CD's with the butrate calc at:

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/calc.htm

With a good divx source, anything down to about 1800-1900 should give you very good results. Of course you might not agree when you see the results, it's all subjective!

thanks for your reply the problem seems to be when i convert from divx to svcd(spit on to 2 discs) using the kvcdx3mpeg-2ntsfilm template in tmpegenc plus i get artifacts in the black color range and the vid somehow looks a bit slowed down(a bit strange i know but does appear that way) any advice on the best way to convert and any software i may need.I know this is a lot to ask but i could do with a little direction.
ps ... the kvcd template set cq25vbr if this helps.. thanks once again..

  4. I think the template you are using has a higher resolution than a standard SVCD (not sure though). I would just try usinf the standard SVCD template in TMPG, use 2 pass VBR and get your average bitrate from the calc link in the last post. Set you minimum to 300 and your max to 2500 (for compatibility). You couls always try setting the horizontal resolution to 352 e.g. 352x480 instead of 480x480. This is actually a CVD. Check out CVD's at....

Because there are less pixels there is more bitrate per pixel. As a general rule of thumb, if my avg bitrate is 2100 or higher then I stick with SVCD to get that sharper picture. Anything less I go with CVD. the results are still very good.

    So in short:

    TMPG
    2 pass VBR
    Normal SVCD template.
    2CD's.

If you want to try a CVD, just load the SVCD template and then unlock it so you can change the resolution.

    Hope this helps.
