Thanks to the grest guides on this site and several others who have helped me.....I'm now able to produce a VCD that plays fine............on the PC.
My problem seems to be my Sony DAV-S300 system, which I now know is notoriously fickle in playing anything other than Original media.
I have obtained "Datasafe" CDRs but still can't play thru my Sony.
I couldn't find "VivaStar" - some posts had said this would be worth a try.
My hope now is to find a fellow Sony-User who has cracked it and can pass on how - what media, what sofware etc works for that machine.
A funny aside - the shop who sold me the Datasafe was selling a cheap DVD player that they said would play a Cheeseburger if you put one in!!!
Cheers, again..D

I had this problem too, but if you use a disk with a blue dye in it like the sirius disks they work fine, try it out and you'll see.
