hey guys sup....
im using TMPEG to enocode from avi to mpg is there a quicker way guys... i have 2 comps 1 1800AMD other a 550MMX and there both nearly the same speed on changing the formats up to 5 hours for a 45 minute avi video..are my settings wrong as some one got an exact guide for it being quicker in TMPEG from avi to mpg the actual settings or summit ..
thx in advance guys ill be back tomorrow)

Preview with thinning or don't preview at all helps a bit. Avoid fixing the preview frame size helps too if you are previewing.
Set the task priority to high in case you are running other applications at the same time.
TMPGEnc 2.59 now supports Hyperthreading. If you have the money and don't know what to spend on, you are try on this new technology. So far I haven't heard any feedback on this as it's just been released these few days. -
so there is no way really in doing it any faster except to buy a 3.0mhz comp so the new release can be used *sigh
there must be a another way somehow(

sandmantfc,
No, there is NO better way - of speeding up TMPG. It's TMPG, not you.
Oh, and your CPU too.
what do you think... that there is a switch that you forgot to flip, and if
you flip the switch, your encodes will fly ?? don't make me laugh.
You can only do one thing. That was already mentioned. Get a faster
CPU. Or else, go w/ a hardware MPEG-2 card, and your encodes will
be real-time, that is, whilie you watch, you are encoding. When you finish
watching, so is your encoding. Only problem w/ this is that you are glued
to the specs used (burned) into the MPEG-2 chip on that particular card,
hence, the limited tweakableness in the quality depart.
That "Hyperthreading" is pretty catchy, ahh ??
Don't let that fool you. It will only be minimal, and also, from what I heard,
is limited to certain condition, which may be just another issue on your
part - darn! Starting to get the picture ??
...hence, the "hype" talk.

Give CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder) a try. You could probably cut your encoding time in half. Be aware that CCE 2.5 has some issues with AMD processors. I think that this was fixed in the newer versions. Maybe 2.64 or 2.66.

ok thx dudes for ya help much appreicted..
hope ive helped a few aswell but i still got a lot to learn.. wow these forums get some posts)

Really?
The 1800AMD is the same speed as the 550 MMX? I find that suprising. Is the CPU meter always full when using both machines?

First of all, be wary of the vast majority of posters on this board, who don't know anything about transcoding, and only know what little bit they do by personal experiences -- the rest is nonsense and rumor they pick up around here.
The difference between these two CPUs is tremendous in TMPEGEnc. I know because I've used both a 550Mhz MMX Intel and a 1.4Ghz Athlon XP. The 550Mhz may take over 3 hours to convert a stream that would take the 1.4Ghz CPU under 1 hour. Nobody knows how much Hyperthreading will help, and anyone claiming to know one way or the other should be ignored.
Now, here are the settings that I know of that have a dramatic impact on performance:
1. Motion search quality - Highest quality can DOUBLE the encode time over High quality.
2. Resizing. Stretching the screen in ANY way results in a very large increase in encoding time. Also, higher resultion screen sizes will also take significantly longer. For instance:
Your have an AVI that is 320x200 -- you can stretch this image to fit a VCD standard resolution of 352x240, but it will take longer than if you left it's size unchanged (leaving it to Center). -
Hyperthreaded system (cheating dual proc system) will only run faster if the application supports dual processor (multi-threading) mode. Since TMPGEnc said it supports it, there you go. Whether the code is optimized for the purpose depends on a rich genie(? how to spell) pig to find out and reports to this forum if he/she is kind enough.
How mainconcept encoder? Anyone tried it? CCE is just too expensive. -

Oh, and BTW, I do pretty much agree with the rest of your post.
