Just wondering the differences between P4 and Celeron. There's a big difference in price for P4 1.8Mhz and Celeron 1.8Mhz. Which would be more suitable for multimedia processing (mainly video encoding)?[/url]

The P4, a Celeron (if its a P4 based one and not a PIII which is sounds to be by the speed.) is basicly the same thing with less onboard Cache ram and a crippled floating point processors. Its the little brother to the P4, they way there is a big price difference.

I have both the P4 and the Celeron. The P4 computer out performs the Celeron computer as far as video processing is concerned.

I say forget both and get an amd chip instead. Better and cheaper.

P4:512KB L2 cache(able to execute faster)
Celeron:128KB L2 cache
Both run a 400MHZ FSB(PC2100)and have .13micron architecture(lower power consumption and heat generated).
Although I'm happy with my Celerya AMD is hard to beat(price+performance)
Here's some comparisons:

Agreed that AMD is the better for price/preformance... but between the 2 a Celeron is not really ment for high end processing.

I'm not sure if its true (and I have no tech details to back this up) but every computer I have used that runs a celeron lags out really bad. A guy at future shop was trying to sell me one and it froze tryin to load a USB camera (not that I would ever by a comp at futureshop, but I was bored). Also I can leave my computer on for a good week without any significant difference, and my parents computer (celeron) runs like a 486 after about 8 hours. I dont thinK I have used a computer with one that was P4 based though..

an AMD Athlon XP 1600+ can be picked up for about $50. That is the absolute best price/performance CPU you will find. For the Cele/P4 thing, P4 is better... look at MOVIEGEEK's post.

maybe better performance in "SOME" areas
however, the AMD chip will allow itself to cook whereas an INTEL chip will actually lower it's speed so that the chip doesn't fry
there is a reason for the prices we pay for things -
P4 will be better for anyone looking for higher performance, the celeron, like AMD's Duron, is a cheaper alternative to the higher performance chips. Kinda like a 4 cylinder turbo versus a V-8... sure you've got power.... but look at all the torque you're missing out on!!!

nfl2k2: this problem is been semi fixed in the current hardware and has been for a while, the system will power off rather then cook. Not exactly as neat as the P4s speed down but cheaper. Beside if your case is coolled well it shouldn't be an issue.
