Though I am sure to get flame posts by saying this, I think my GE 1101p DVD player is a good comprimise between functionality and price. I have gotten it to play bitrates of over 4000kbps--I usually set my xsvcd max. bitrate to 4500 and have no problems whatsoever. It has optical and coaxial digital outputs, which are a handy feature. It also has an S-Video output. It plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R as far as I know from testing it myself (I don't know about dvd-rw or dvd+rw, though). I am not sure about the progressive scan--I don't think it has that feature. With the firmware hack, I was able to make it play miniDVD's and defeat the macrovision copy protection. Best of all--120 bucks at good 'ole Wally-World (probably a little cheaper now if that stupid whistling smiley face has made it to the electronics dept. since last August)

Pioneer. My 343 has all that (haven't tested DVD-R/+R though) except for progressive output - you should be able to find one by a slightly different model number that does support that now.

have an Accoustic Solutions DVD player it plays all formats except CD-G and has a loopholes menu so it can be set for all regions. I would recommend one to anyone. I also belive the Cyberhome is a good cheap reliable DVD too

i have an Apex ad600a. it plays everything i have thrown into it, VCD'S,SVCD'S,XVCD'S. only negative thing i've heard about it is the drive doesn't last as long as other DVD players..........

One word: Sampo
This thing is affordable (about $150), plays DVDs very well, and has played EVERYTHING I have thrown at it, from VCD, SVCD, mp3, audio cd, DVD-R, hell, even miniDVD's! (the holy grail). I haven't tested DVD+RWs yet, because they are against my religion
It has hidden menus to disable Macrovision, change region settings, and even turn off DSS decoding (if for some reason you want to do that). NO HACKS REQUIRED!"I think I know exactly what I mean, when I say it's a Shpadoinkle day!" -

I just saw this one on the Best Buy site (I order there frequently). RCA RC6001P, recently released; the RC6000P did not support much in the way of varied media, but the RC6001P supports nearly everything!
Their price is $219.99 (US Dollars), but it's on a small sale this week for $208.99, details are below, link is above. This looks like one HELL of a deal.

Anyone ever seen this done with a sampo?

It plays everything I've thrown at it, it a 7 disc changer and is progressive. It's at least as compatible as the Pioneer DV-333 that it replaced. -

CDR
CRDW

Only thing it complained about was a CDR with MP3s, it did not know what to do with that. BUT that does not bother me because my Altec Lansing speakers on my computer are better than the Koss speakers on my home stereo, lol.--
