I have been reading for weeks on the countless methods to make a DVD into a SVCD and I finally felt I had enough info to attempt it. I used DVD2SVCD software, as well as TMPGENC to encode and Fireburn to burn the cd. To make a long story short, to my amazement the SVCD played in my standalone DVD player. I had to figure out how to change titles, because the remote wasn't working, but that is because it was now labeled "index" and I had to go to a submenu to change the indexes. At any rate, everything was working PERFECTLY, sound and picture, and I was utterly amazed at how clear the picture was. I used my 25th anniversary Jaws DVD to make a back up copy on SVCD's. The first thing I noticed before burning the .bin files is that there were only two .bin files and both of them were well over 700 MB. One was 774 MB, the other was 804 MB. I realized the size of these files After burning them. I was surprised that Fireburn would burn files over 700 MB on a 700 MB cd, but it did. The SVCD was playing great, but on "BOTH" SVCD disks, Jaws 1 of 1, and Jaws 1 of 2, in the middle of the disk the frame just freezes and the time keeps elapsing on the dvd player. I can't go to ANY "indexes" after the freeze point, I can only go to indexes before it and start them over. Can anybody please tell me if this has anything to do with the size of the two files I burned on the disk? If not, any other ideas? Thank in advance.

  2. well not sure if heard of dvdx but it will split the files to fit on to either 650 or 700 meg cd while you are encoding the the dvd. not sure if its the fastest way but it is pretty simple. just press start encode then about 5 hours later you are done. its a littly tricky at first because to get some error messages when loading the ifo file but that is normal.

When burning a vcd or svcd you can fit a 800mb movie onto one cd because it uses a different mode than it does to put data on the cd. There are MANY other posts on this topic that will go into more detail; just search for one of those if you want to know more. I don't think that the size of the file has anything to do with the time elapse problem.

  4. mode 1 is for data and audio....which is rated as 700 MB data or 80 min audio

mode 2 is for (S)VCD, which can fit 800 MB ... keep in mind (S)VCD has some overhead the actual movie file that can fit will be less...the max i've been able to fit w/o overburning is 795.57 MB

Poopyhead, thanks for the info. When you say there are two modes, are they modes I can change in DVD2SVCD? Or is that just a term for saying that more data can be put on a CD-R? I think i'm confused because I keep hearing people saying that for a SVCD you can put between 36-60 "mins" on a CD-R. And now I am hearing 800 MB'S. Can you put whichever is "greater?" I did burn my dvd of Jaws onto my hard drive. I burned it onto two CD-R'S. Both of which were about 800 MB'S. One was 804. The both started playing great with video and sound, and all of a sudden, in the middle of the fifth or sixth chapter, the video and sound froze, but the time continued to elapse on the standalone DVD player. Do you have any idea why this is? Is there anything I can do to correct it? It is very discouraging when everything works, but after the fifth or sixth chapter, it all freezes. Thanks again, and by the way, nice name...lol

i'm not familar with dvd2svcd....i'm referring to burning with nero, if dvd2svcd uses that proggie to burn or not. as least in nero, they have templates (i.e. VCD and SVCD templates you can use to burn). in terms of minutes, disregard that...those are just for reference....strictly go by file size....i.e. 800 MB max for (S)VCD. the "80 miniutes" on the CD-R is for audio.

Poopyhead, thanks again for the info. Actually I am doing the burning with a program called "fireburner", do you think Nero is better? DVD2SVCD has several programs combined into one. I use TMPGenc for the encoding process. I saw that you wrote you put 795.95 MB's max on one of your SVCD's. I actually just burned another movie, again at 804 MB's on one of the CDR-s and it worked perfectly! I also noticed that I didn't have the frame freeze on "either" of the two jaws disks when I played them on my DVD Rom. But I did in my standalone. Do you have any idea why this might be? Thanks again for all of your help. I saw where you are having a problem with the end of panic room, I hope you resolve that issue. Thanks

  8. well..i'm guessing if a problem on appears on your dvd player..it could be a compatibility issue ...

there's a dvd player compatibility section on this website you can look up all the info about your dvd player

also, don't burn faster than 4x and try different cd-r media, could be your dvd player doesn't like this media

Poopyhead, you are very intelligent! First, thanks again for your response. Second, I made sure I became very fimiliar with this site before I posted anything because of how I saw that is the way it basically went around here. At any rate, I checked "several" DVD players and about two weeks ago, sold my Sony on ebay that I bought about 1 year ago. That DVD player was great, it just didn't read SVCD or even VCD's as it said...and many MP3's didn't play either. That DVD player had a remote that was "glow in the dark" and very sophisticated with jog controls, etc...I have not seen anyone, including Sony make that even today. They are getting cheaper with the little things. At any rate, I had done extensive research, mainly on this sites DVd compatibility list for DVD players to buy and I do like Sony, so I decided on another Sony, the N715, and I didn't like the way it set things up from the very beginning. It did read SVCD, and even distinguished between SVCD and VCD, so I didn't think it had anything to do with that Sony, but when I tried it in my DVD Rom, I had no problems anywhere. I thought it was a burning or decoding issue because it froze in the same exact place on "both" disks. But I told myself today that I will have to try this PHilis "724AT" which got nothing but tens on this site for playing VCD's, SVCD's, and everything else. It even reads Jpeg and has zoom. Best buy had this DVD player for a little over $100, so I figured I would at least buy it and return it if It didn't work. Well, I'm sure you've already figured out that it worked PERFECTLY! I took my Sony back which was $60 more, got a MUCH better DVD PLAYER and the rest is history. This thing not only reads all of these formats, it also does it ridiculously fast. Even the DVD door opens at lightning speed. I've always liked Sony, but it will be awhile before I every get another Sony Product. I just finished watching Jaws in PERFECT picture and sound on TWO cd-r's/SVCD's. At any rate, I'm really pretty surprised you were right on the money with the DVD player, because it wouldn't seem like it would be the DVD player freezing in the exact same spot on both disks, but that's why I asked you. Thanks again and I hope you resolved your panic room issue.

  10. heh, should've asked which brand of dvd player you use....the general idea is to never get a sony...their brand is suppose to have good reputation, but in terms of dvd players, they're not that good....compatibility or quality ... try pioneer for that
