I have a friend I gave some VCDs to who has a Mac. Although I know he should get MacVCD, is it also possible for him to open up the .DAT files in the MPEGAV folder with Windows Media Player for Mac? Will they play?

    Thanks in advance!

That's an interesting proposition. Don't know if it will actually do it. Will have to check on that. However, it's not common for Mac users to have WMP, so it would have to be downloaded.
Easiest way to play would be using QT player (although advanced VCD features wouldn't work). Every Mac should have QT.

Can Quicktime play .DAT files from a VCD? When I try to do it in my Quicktime (on PC), it gives me that charming error message that it's a file Quicktime doesn't understand. That's why I was thinking of the WMP for Mac option.

WMP is a waste of space, especially on the Mac platform! Quicktime will play VCDs directly on a mac.

So how do you play a VCD with Quicktime?

On a Mac all you have to do is open the only file on the root of the VCD. Most likely that file is already assosiated with Quicktime, but if not you can open it through QT. Or you could open the .dat file in Quicktime as well. Or you could use one of numerous VCD players available at www.versiontracker.com

OK, thanks. So, have any of you Mac users tried this gizmo that allows you to play VCDs with your Quicktime? Does it work OK? My Mac-loving friend will thank you. :P

  9. VCD's do not play on a Mac using Quicktime 6.x Quicktime 5.x plays them fine. Jaguar can not use Quicktime 5.x bummer. MacVCD X works great but it's not free. I'm not sure if this is a feature or bug in Jaguar. WMV for Mac doesn't play VCD nor mpegs as far as I know only .avi& asf . Quicktime for windows will play VCD's and mpegs but you have to change some settings as WMV is set to play them in Windozes. later Schwinn
