  1. Okay...My question here simply how to take advantage of the SVCD format.

I'm aware that if I downloaded, say, an MPEG file in VCD format, I wouldn't be able to convert it to SVCD and get any type of quality upgrade.

If I wanted to really get extra quality out of the SVCD format, I'm going to need a higher quality source. How would I be able to do this?

What I'm most curious about is if there is a way to transfer a file that isn't specifically in VCD/SVCD format, but could be converted to either of those with noticable differences. Is this how a .bin/cue works, or is that simply a compressed MPEG-1?

most svcds are made from dvds, or very high quality screeners (ie. traffic screener from twciso).
svcd mpg2s are very good quality with quite big filesizes. so transferring a file that is better quality than svcd so that you can re-encode would not be feasible with cable modems etc. unless you wanna download vobs are whatnot.

bin/cue is just a cdimage of the vcd. like an iso. if you directly burn the bin/cue with cdrwin or fireburner, you'll get a vcd that'll play in your standalone.
