  1. which is better if i just want to play my svcd or vcd on the tv which is a 36 inch rca tv and a (s)vcd compatible dvd player?

    i understand the 2, but isnt the tv defaulted to play at the ntsc(30) one?
    or is ntscfilm better in some way?

  2. VCD supports NTSC-FILM framerates. SVCD does not (though it usually works, and if it doesn't then adding the 3:2 pulldown flags in will almost always work on DVD players).

    If you have a 23.976 fps progressive source, then you should use NTSC-FILM. Essentially, compared to standard NTSC or PAL, you have an effective 25% boost in bitrate (the actual bitrate is the same, but the bits to pixel ratio is 25% higher). You can (and will) notice the quality difference.

    All VCD compliant players are supposed to support NTSC-FILM framerates but not all do. If it doesn't, you will have to use standard NTSC.

    The Demo VCD test discs ( http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcd ) contain sample video clips of PAL, NTSC and NTSC-FILM to test in your player.
