I am new to making VCDs and I’ve been having a lot of troubles. I have been practicing with music videos and 3 out of the 4 had the same problem with the audio and video being out of sync. This is the message that from Nero when I’ve tried to make the VCDs with them:

The File _____________ mpg is not a valid file for creating a standard video cd V 2.0 (CD-I player) disc. A compliant video file requires the following specs: MPEG-1 which was encoded for video cd:
    Audio: 44.1 kHz; stereo kbit/s
Video: 352x240/29.97 Hz or 352x240/23.976 hz or 352x288/25Hz

    The following problems were found:
-stream encoding which is invalid for a VCD
    -invalid video stream: 29.97 frames/sec, 320x240 pixels

How would you like to continue?
Turn off standard compliance and continue
    Re-encode the video file
    Cancel

I’ve just been re-encoding because that’s what I thought had to be done anyway. Does anyone know what this means? 3 of the 4 mpg videos that I’ve gotten from WinMx have had this problem. Isn’t Nero supposed to re-encode the mpg files anyway? When I choose re-encode it gives me the out of sync playback. Does this just mean the 1 mpg that did work had already been encoded for VCD by the person sharing it? If so, why won't the others work and what should I do about it?

If someone could help me, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

  2. Never expect files from P2P file sharing progs to be perfect or compliant. In fact, most of them aren't. You might be downloading Mpeg2 (SVCD) and trying to burn as Mpeg 1 (VCD) or vice versa. A lot of files (Mpeg) might be encoded to fit onto 1 CDR so they're X(S)VCD (non-standard (S)VCD) and therefore non-compliant (you could turn off compliancy but then you need to check whether your DVD player accepts X(S)VCDs). And, of course, Nero will need to re-encode those files (if you don't turn off the compliancy) which might create even more problems since Nero isn't the best prog to encode to (S)VCD mainly because it's main purpose is burning. Use dedicated encoding progs like TMPGEnc to encode to (S)VCD.

I tried the only other option that I hadn't. I had always gone past the message that I got above and just hit the re-encode the video file choice and then went ahead with the burn.

So, while I was waiting here for someone nice to help me out, I just clicked the turn off the standard compliance and continue option and then went to the burn.

What I got was a VCD that WAS totally in sync with the audio and video, but was playing on the far left part of my television set. None of the video was missing/cut off, it just was formatted somehow to be smaller and the entire video was playing just on one side of the tv screen. But the video was clear and the video was in perfect sync.

Please, I've been at this for days. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong based on all this info and then lead me towards the way to correct it? I've read posts for hours and hours and I still don't know what's wrong.

    Thanks

Long answer is learn how to frameserve with avisynth--->>CCE or TMPG

there is a fairly easy guide to follow here:

Just like i said - those files are non-standard, you could either re-encode (but use TMPGEnc not Nero) or turn off compliancy (IF your DVD player accepts non-standard Mpeg1/2, if it doesn't then it will not play or come up with different problems like the one you described).

    O Kewl.

The instructions for tmpgenc shows an example of an avi video and wav audio being encoded into mpeg.

I'm using an mpg. When I press start it tells me that the mpg file already exists and do I want to overwrite it. Then I press yes and it tell it that the ____mpg file cannot be created.

I feel like I'm close, but don't know what I'm doing wrong now. Am I close and can you please tell me what I need to do to correct this and encode my mpg file properly?

    Thanks so much.

  7. If you are using Wizard in TMPGEnc then in the 5th page type in a different name for your Output file (otherwise TMPGEnc will need to replace YOUR mpeg with the NEW one which is impossible without creating problems). If you're not using Wizard then change the Output file name at the bottom of your main TMPGEnc window.

  8. You were close indeed. When you want to re-encode, it helps if you give your output file a different name from your input file...

Before re-encoding, make sure to select the proper PAL or NTSC VCD template (press the Load button at the bottom right, then choose the appropriate template file from the list).

In the output box, change the name of your file to OriginalFileName_fixed.mpg or whatever makes you happy, then press the start button... At the end of the process, you will be left with 2 files, your original file, and the newly encoded file. You use the new file and burn it with Nero as a VCD.

    Nothing to it.

    I made my first VCD!!!!

Thanks to easydvd and especially O kewl and Aguillon. If you are ever in Tucson, the drinks are on me.

I do have on last question. When I gave the file a NEW name it went to the next page and started encoding before I could hit the load button and the right template. Does anyone know why? Or why it still worked? I did mess around with it and when I did press load later and then the vcd template, what is supposed to happen? A screen pops up and then if you save it, it just closes back up again. I don't see any change anyway.

I'm sure I'll have more bumps in the road, but thanks to you folks 4 days of pulling out my own hair has finally come to an end.

The world is great and you guys/girls rule!

    Thanks!

PS-One last thing. Now that I have the new encoded file, I can delete the old file that I downloaded, right?

  10. You, obviously, were using the Wizard. In Wizard the template is chosen on the very first page (whatever is selected in the left pane is your basic template). It started encoding straight away after the page 5 because on that page box called Start Encoding Immediately was ticked. Untick the box next time if you don't want it to encode straight away. If you are using Wizard you MUST select the template in the first page, you can't load it after you set everything up as it will create problems. Before you delete your old file i would advise you to try your new file in DVD player as you might have loaded the wrong template and this can cause playback problems. If it plays perfect then you are lucky and have chosen the right template and can delete your old file. If not, then load your old file into TMPGEnc again and encode using the correct template.
