If you put an mpeg2 on a VCD then its actually an Xvcd.

There is no gaurantee that it will play on more. All players act differently with different files. Check compatibility section of this website for more info

Well, if it's MPEG2, then (X)SVCD is more apropriate. Since VCD is MPEG1, an MPEG2 is too far away from specs for VCD, no matter how big an X you put in front of it.

I burn my mpeg2 as vcd w/ nero. That is the only way to get my player to play svcd's. so is that XVCD or XSVCD? I would call it XVCD.
