  1. Hi I have comcast cable internet. At first the connection was always connected however lately it disconnects and reconnects sometimes like every 5 minutes, other times every 3 hours. My connection is very unpredictable lately. I have a Linksys Cable Modem and a DLink router. I have turn off DHCP to see if this fix it but it is the same story. The cable modem seems to be conected always since the cable light is always on but I may be wrong. Can the router be the problem? Has any of you had this problem before? I use Mirc a lot and it is essential to have a stable connection for it. If anyone has any hints or solutions in how to fix my connection problem let me know.

I'm a cable splice/sweep tech. I'm the guy who comes to upgrade to broadband Your problem is comcast.........not a lot of stability in the equipment they use.

  3. did you say your modem light stays on ? if your connect light is on and you cant access the internet, either your ethernet card or your modem is bad. if the connect light is constantly going out, it will be one of two things. signal level, or ingress (a leak in a cable somewhere). both problems can easily be fixed, just call and make an appointment.

    I'm with easydvd on this.

As a ADSL user who spends a lot of time on P2P sites, I've noticed that it's nearly always the cable users who have poor connection and speeds. I just think that cable is inherently unstable.

    Hope your situation improves!

ps if you look at the Viz (www.viz.co.uk) profanisaurus:

cable laying v. To excrete solid stools. As opposed to crop spraying (qv).

That just about sums up cable connections.

  5. thanks for the suggestions. I use kazaalite with its facttrack extra program, however i notice that when I close that program (fasttrack) then my connection does not disconect anymore. This is very odd i think, I really like fasttrack because it helps in P2P downloads however if I run it the internet connection disconect/reconect after a while.

  6. when the install is done correct, you cannot beat cable for speeds (av 1500kbps download, up to 500 kbps upload), stability or price when compared to DSL. I've had cable internet for over two years and have never had a problem with my connection or my speed. If you are having problems with downloads from Kazaa, try another P2P site. So many people are on Kazaa at the same time, and so many try too upload the same thing from the same source at the same time that it does not matter what you have, your upload speed will slow tremendously.

  7. P2P sites just suck anymore, my suggestion is easynews.com..

Not advocating anything, but if ya use P2P, you are gonna get alot better content at easynews, without having to worry about the other end having a stable connection..

For those not familar with easynews.com, it decodes the binaries from newsgroups..

Simply the best 10 bucks a month I spend..

I don't want this to become a cabls / adsl flame war, but the point I want to make is that 'congestion' on p2p sites does not seem to effect adsl users as much as cable users.
I've seen cable users upload from me at much less than a 56k dial-up modem, but at the same time an adsl user connects and can download at 20-25k/s.
Maybe the only way to test it is to time a download from a fast site i.e. Microsoft, Norton etc. (though i hear Playboy is the fastest site around....)

    Best wishes,

    Rob
