  1. Hi,
I am going to buy a DVD player, perhaps SONY 405NS.
I wondered if all DVD players can play 800MB and 900MB CDs as VCDs or SVCDs. Such information is mentioned nowhere in the DVD Players reports section of this site. Can anybody confirm that or at least for the above SONY. Thanks!

  2. normally the box says it reads (S)VCDs... And if it reads them => it can read 800-900 Mb cd's

  3. If a DVD player can read CDR then it should be able to read the 90-99 minute CDR's, but not necessarily to full capacity. I have a Pioneer 636, and it will only read upto 88 minutes on these discs.

  4. hmmm, that's strange, cuz i bought a (VERY) cheap DVD player, and it reads the discs fine, so i guess it should work for all players...

  5. Remember, any CD that is over 80 mins is outside the CD standards. This means that just because a player can play CDR(W)'s does not mean it can play anything beyond 80mins. Most if not all CD players, be they audio CD's, DVD players or even CD-ROM drives, will read the 1st 80 mins, many will go someway beyond that but not all will read the entire disk.

Its just like X(S)VCd's, once you start going out of spec, compatibility decreases and your success rate with it.
