Also looking for the same thing. I've got tons of svcds that i've burned (however don't have a dvd player yet.. just watchin 'em on my computer for now). my media are all princo, pine, and gigastorage. I'd like to find a dvd player with the best compatibility for svcd across different media. I know that the apex ad1500 is good in the sense that it plays pretty much everything you can throw at it, but it's a pretty cheap player. Is there something out there that's got the compatibility of the ad1500 with more features and built a little better?

My Sampo 612 will play SVCD even at a 9800 bitrate,my Daewoo 5800 will take upto 8000. I would say your best bet is a Sampo or Daewoo.
I would avoid Apex,I had three different Apex models and none worked properly, they will play pretty much anything but not very well.

  8. The first and only DVD player I have had until recently was the Apex-660. It plays most formats and disks. However, the quality is not as good as a new Pioneer 253 I just bought. When playing VCD's on the Apex, I have large square blocks in the dark areas, not easy to see, but they are there. However, on the Pioneer, the blocks are gone, the black areas are clean. It has nothing to do with reading the disks, but it has to do with the mpeg decoder quality. The old Apex-660 does not measure up to a new Pioneer DVD player as far as video quality goes.

I've owned quite a few dvd players... the best for quality being the Pioneer 343 which played SVCD's and VCD's fine... but the best one for playing all the different formats, including XDVD's in all its different forms, I would suggest getting the Apex 1100w which they still have on sale at Walmart the last time i was there for like $54.... HOWEVER: GET THE CORRECT SERIAL NUMBER!!!! ...... any 1100w with a serial number ending in ME05 .....the ones with this serial play everything i've thrown at them.... i've bought 5 of them for family members, no problems with any of them.....
