I am attempting to rip only short scenes from movies (i.e. Monty Python, History of the World, etc comedy sketches) with the intent to later compile them all onto a DVD(s). I've, in the past, converted many of these scenes to avi's/mpg's allowing me to trim them to just the good parts but am unable to figure a way to trim VOB files so that I may upgrade my future archiving.

Links to tutorials or capable software would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I cannot confirm this for myself, but I hear TMPGEnc can load VOBs. It has two editing functions as well.

Smartripper has chapters and cells. I have never pulled a cell off but these could possibly be so.

If that doesn't do it then you could also select the chapter where the scene is and during conversion in tmpgenc just select the range.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  4. I take it you use DVD2AVI to frameserve the Vobs as a AVI to
    Tmpgenc?

DVD2AVI have start and end points adjustments,
it is the [ ] on either side of <>

But of you plan to create a DVDR with parts of vobs
that are not re-encoded I guess tmpgenc is not needed
    but the program Vobedit instead.

Have I always been this smart,
or is that something that grow over time?

  5. Golem,

the best 'outright' program to do this is DVDx. I suggest you try v7 as it
is more stable and better quality. If you prefer using tmpgenc, you
can rip the VOB's to the hdd and use source range OR use DVD2AVI's
built in start and stop slider at the bottom of the window.

While all the above solutions allow you to cut once scene at a time, try some
of the downloadable editors such as www.ulead.com and you may
    find the job even easier.

Many thanks everybody! Very useful replies!!!

Since I have TMPGEnc installed I gave it a quick try and all seems to work great...although it does arise a few more questions. As for the other application/process suggestions, I intent to try them also!

    Much appreciated!

  7. OK, Here u go: Use SMartRipper, then make sure u use Movie mode, not file mode. Select the Chapter u want (chapter is as short as u can get doing the easy method)and rip only that one. it will rip it as 1 vob file for u even if the actual chapter is in 2 VOBs on the orginal disc. If u need shorter still, I suggest DVD2avi to trim the source to the stuff u want, then reencode with TMpeg(easiest way, but time consuming) Usually chapter rips will work for what u want.

Yep fester, that's basically what I've been doing for the past year when archiving my selected movie clips to VCD's. DVDing is a whole new ball game for me though. And yes, I do really choose to trim all fat off the clips so keeping chapters in full is not an option.

If you get a moment you might read my follow-up thread to this thread and maybe you can shed some light on those queries.
