  1. I know you guys probably get a ton of questions in this forum about players.
But I need help finding a good dvd player in US that is region free or is easily modified(no physical modification). Could anyone suggest a player with good picture quality and preferably that plays homebrewed svcds.

  2. Have you thought about the Apex brand of dvd players? They play homemade vcd and svcd's just fine.

  3. defenetly have to say i would go with a apex 600w with modchip. you can buy them seperately or get one already modified on ebay. these units play vcd, svcd, mp3, all region dvds and rce(region 1 dvds most region free dvd players will not play). If you can not find one e-mail me @ jessermosbrucker@yahoo.com and i will help you.

I have the apex ad703 and it played everything for a while, but 2 years down the road it's not playing pressed cds or any RW media. I think I need to pull it apart and clean the read head and the track, but I'm kindof lazy so it'll take me a while.

The thing to consider about apex and other off-brand (well, apex is the bigger of the off-brands) players is that they sometimes use crappy decoder chips. My apex had moderate video quality, but I could always see some vertical lines (about every inch or two) in black scenes. Since many big name brand players are also hackable you might consider that if quality is more of a concern than money.

THe dvd hacks link to the left has comments on known hacks for dvd players, including some commentary. Look for players you can afford and research them here.
