  1. I am thinking about buying a DVD player to install in my computer. I have noticed that they are around $35 to $75 US. NOT a Writer, just a player.

I want to be able to copy DVD's to my hard drive and burn SVCD backup copies for my stand alone player. I have a CD RW.

There is so many out there if someone could point me in the right direction, such as the better brands, I would appreciate. I want to be able to play the SVCD in the player also for when I am able to purchase a writer.

    Thanks,
    Dazed

You get what you pay for... mostly. You might want to spend a few more dollars and get a good one. Brands like LG, Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, ACER, and maybe Digital Research. I say Digital research based on reputation with other products. Pioneer and Panasonic I have used/are useing. You might want to look around the forums for ones that can be de-region (region 0). I don't personally worry about region as I only have USA DVD's (region 1). As far as players go, I like power DVD 4. Though it doesn't play SVCD very easily.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

No dont get a pioneer. It will limit your dvd ripping speeds. Make sure you get on that does not limit your dvd ripping speed. Lite on seems to be a good brand from what ive been reading.

  5. Hi Troy,

I have a Lite-On CD-RW and CDRom but this drive will be a read only. I won't be doing any ripping with it.

I have the Toshiba SD2800 stand alone DVD player that I understand plays all forms. Even CD-RW. I haven't played anything in it except DVD's.
