  1. I AM NEW on the subject of vcds, and i do have the pioneer 104 dvdr drive.
Does that mean, once i have the dvdr drive ,and dvdr media being as cheap as a $1 for each these days, should i skip and forget the learning curve on burning vcds?and just burn it on dvdr instead?
cuase i heared some mentioning about dvdr medias being so cheap these days and even cheaper further down the road.

  2. It may be a little more cost effective to learn the ropes and make your coasters with cheap CD-R media. I paid $18 for a 50 pack of reasonable quality CD-Rs and I know there are many cheaper than that.

  4. vcd is still a very valid and easy way to record your media. it is much cheaper and programs to manipulate them are everywhere. i save the dvd for some projects but vcd is good for burnin vids for my family as there dvd players can play them.

  5. I don't think so unless I can get 100-pack dvd for less than $10. vcd is still very cheap to distribute photo slide show.

  7. You pay for the quality you get with VCD, it maybe 10 dollars for 50/100 CD-Rs, but you aren't matching anywhere close to quality.

You can buy 90 DVD-Rs for 100 dollars and have just about 1:1 quality. So if you have a DVD burner, no since in going to VCD.

With DVD encoding you'll need to learn all about that and authoring, while VCD is just encoding and burning. So it's good to know about all formats but to own a DVD burner and learn and still use VCD is a waste. DVD will be like how VCD is in about 5 years tops. By then there will be another high end format that people will be using and DVD will be the middle or low-end that some still will use.

  8. I still use all of them, (X)VCD, SVCD and DVD recorder, with CD's at 14 cents each and any good DVD-R still over a Buck, I use both formats as I see fit, A crappy internet downloaded movie is never gonna be wasted on a good DVD-R and why copy a great looking DVD movie to VCD unless its for a family member who is too cheap to buy you some DVD-R's. Plus why put a 20 minute VHS Aerobics Tapes on a DVD-R, what a waste, capture it on MPEG 2 SVCD, good enough for 14 cents. When DVD-R are 25 to 25 cents then I will see no use for VCD or SVCD and as fast as the prices are falling you may see that in 6 months with DVD Burners way under $200, I see burners under $200 by christmas or soon after. Heck the DVD-R media I buy 3 months ago was $1.60 each now its $1.05 each, and a year ago you could not even find the media under $5.

Until EVERYONE has a T-1 line or better, there will always be a place for VCD in the underground movie distribution pipeline.

  10. I have 3 Pioneer A03's and a Pioneer DVR-7000 stand-alone and still use cdr's to put old "Leave It To Beaver" and "Munsters" episodes in SVCD format.

I guess it depends on what one plans to do with their VDC, SVCD, or DVD's.

I bought a Pioneer 104 burner, because I didn't know I could burn VCD's on my CD-RW. But, now that I know, I plan on learning and using both to do different projects.

Besides, some of the svcd's I plan on making, I plan to offer as a bonus item to something I'm going to sell and a lot of people still don't own dvd players even on their computer's.

That did include me, as I don't care for the wide screen format that seems to be pushed. I don't care for the "squashed" effect. I didn't buy a large screened TV just to have a 1/3 of the screen blackend.

BUT, I don't mind "squashed" on my computer as long as it's not a full length movie... more like a five minute music video etc.

PS: I like the CD Presskits that come from the Studios and plan on making some from older movie press kits I have that didn't come with CD's. (Bonus Items, not for resale. Though I do know it's still copyright infringement.) I do a lot of ebaying where some people aren't as picky about things they get for free.
Never discourage anyone...who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.

  12. To put it simple, I have sold my Pioneer-104 and bought a new fast CD-RW drive, and I'm putting the PV-231 back in my PC. I'm going back to VCD. Cheap, fast and compatible!

Also, VCD and CVD can virtual exist on DVD media. That way, you can do VCDs and CVDs as long as mpeg 1/2 exist!
