Macrovision is a copy protection system to prevent you from making tape copies of DVD disks and it does. Some DVD players allow you to turn off the macrovision protection, allowing you to make perfect copies of a DVD disk.

well one thing with macro turned off you can make a copy as good as your imput source is, A VHS copy is not even gonna come close to a SVHS copy or even a Hi8mm, but at least you can copy to VHS and it would at least be watchable, not as good as a store bought VHS copy. A $300 JVC SVHS VCR will make a better copy than your no name brand made in China Sub $60 VCR's.
More important is that it will allow you to capture on any computer capture card in MPEG or AVI and that can have some pretty stunning results then.
