asf -> avi - what am i doing wrong?

i'm trying to convert an asf movie in mpg42 format into an avi, so i can convert it to mpg1

anyways, virtuadub 1.2 is supose to work.
after an hour of searching, i found a copy floating around

when i go to open an asf file to convert, it says "Couldn't locate decompressor for format MP42 (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V2)."

so i looked into it further. suposidly this codec is installed w/ mediaplayer 6.4, but nothing newer, so i reinstalled that one. still, no luck. can anyone help me out here. all i wanna do is convert this little 9 min video clip to avi?
