What will the DVD hack let me do?

I have surfed around the web a bit to try and find out why someone would want to hack the DVD and I am not having much luck. Anyway, could someone tell me why you would hack a DVD player.

DVD hacks allow the home user to do things they should be able to do, but the MPAA (The Motion Picture Association of America) doesn't think you should. The MPAA divided the world up into regions so you couldn't buy a DVD in one region and play it on a DVD player in a different region.
This way they control the regional distribution of DVDs. And they also built in a "feature" to DVD players that don't allow fast forwarding the FBI scare logo at the beginning of a movie.

Both of these are "hackable" on some DVD players. It should also be noted that the MPAA doesn't like these hacks. They pressured an online auction to not allow auctioning of the old APEX 600a since it was so hackable. I don't know if that worked out or not for them.

Two top reason to hack:

To make it region code free.
(As DVD are no released at the same time in world
they decided to make 8 regions)

To disable Macrovision copy protection.


Others would be, to add your own "boot" picture etc.

So to recap. Why a DVD Player Hack?

-To play a movie where ever you damned well feel like it.
- To Fast forward past the warnings of a foreign police force.
- To remove a copy protection that prevents you from plugging a DVD player into your VCR because your TV only has 1 set of inputs.

Last but not least - because the MPAA are pricks!
