So I'm merrily going along, reading through this wonderful site, using the guides to get a good basic understanding of how much of this stuff works, successfully burning a few VCDs and now even trying some SVCDs. I'm doing the 'strip the sound out of a DivX with AC3 using Virtualdub's File->Save WAV' step of the procedure when, for the first time, the following error message appears:
"The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."
Now, I've done this exact same process about a dozen times, and this is the first time this has come up. So I do as it says and check the sampling rate and channel count... and sure enough, under File->File Information it tells me that the audio on this .avi file has five channels. I do remember this person saying that this was a primo capture, which would explain it... but I just want it to come out of my plain-jane stereo setup.
Now, I didn't just come running straight to you guys; I googled the net and searched this forum for this error message, but nothing I found dealt with this specific problem. So... little help? Can I convert 5-channel to 2-channel, or is there another way to save the audio track other than this commonly-used method? Or am I just missing a step in Virtualdub that would allow me to correct for this?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Simple, Save the audio out using virtualdub, but use direct stream copy rather than full processing mode. rename the resulting file to file.ac3 rather than .wav. Convert this to stereo wav using Headac3he.
NOTE: if Headc3he has problems, try running the ac3 file through ac3fix, use google to find it. BeSweet may also be able to do this.
