I am using a Canopus ADVC-1394 and have been ESTATIC about the results. I have converted 20 Hi-8 tapes to DVD and the quality and audio-sync is excellent.
    I love it.

You didn't say what kind of maccine you are using. But I am using A Dell Latitude and have the Hauppauge WinTV PVR-USB. I am very pleased with the results. I can cpture off cable or air. Also I caputre from the monitor output of my TV. The PVR allows me to capture at MPEG1 or MPEG2.
Hauppauge supplies goog enough software to edit and convert, WINTV2K is excellent. I have started to use TMPGenc for conversion and Easy CD Creator for burning. Hope this helps.
