  1. Does anyone know what the big exe files that people post on Kazaa are?? I downloaded a program which was >700 megs. When I double click on it, it appears to go to DOS and then quits. Anyone know how to crack these.?

  2. First of all, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DOWNLOAD!!!!!!! There are alot of viruses that people make look like or build into real programs. Now that being said, scan ANY file you download.

Many of those packages are compressed into self extracting archives. And the exe files hold the needed install files. But at 700MB, I assume you are downloading something large like an OS.

  3. I assume it is a self extracting file (other exe files I have downloaded do go into a program that allows you to extract it) But it won't execute. It just appears to go into DOS and then quit. Is this the fault of the person who is trying to make a self extracting file but is not doing it right. It is not an OS it is a large graphics program. If I right click before downloading it says it is an ISO but when I try to rename it to .iso my computer starts terminally grinding and has to be rebooted. I wonder why these people do this it has to take a lot of time and you would think they would precheck it. it also takes days to download. Any other ideas or is it just an electronic coaster?

  4. If its an ISO you cant just double click it to open it. You have to burn it to a disc. With nero select burn from image. Or search down a program that can open and extract ISO Image files.

If its a self extracting archive, you don't need to run it to unpack the contents. You should have WinRAR,WinZIP installed and maybe WinACE

All of those can be used by right clicking the EXE and select extract to
This is safer than running the EXE

If you have Norton Anti Virus 2003 you can also right click the EXE and select scan for virus's

  6. I finally renamed it to an .iso file (took forever). Then I burned it with Nero. It was not trivial. First it gave me a wrong format error and did I want to correct it. I said yes - then it was too big for one CD. Did I want to overburn - I said yes. Then it asked if I wanted to finalize it. I said yes. It appeared to start properly so I went to bed. In the morning it said "CD burned properly etc " as usual but It would not Autostart the program. It did activate the auto CD thingee but then so would an empty CD. Anyway Windows Explorer gives this message:-

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows."

I'm about ready to give up. Can anybody help or have I made yet another coaster?

I would not be downloading any executables from Kaaza. Having said that it's quite possible that you got a corrupt download.

When you download a bin, iso, rar etc you should know what your getting. xxx svcd.bin is telling you its a SVCD, your player must be able to play them and the burn program must be told what type of disk you want, the bin/iso should automatically do this for you.

However the easiest is to extract the contents of the iso and use the mpeg stream to make a disk as normal.

Who ever made the ISO, may also have set up DAO (Disk at once) and if your burner only has TAO (Track at once) you have another problem.

90% of EXE files on Kazaa are just fine, so long as you have some tools to test them, why worry. I download the dialers all the time, they don't do a dam thing when your on broadband

Use CDMarge or WinISO, ISOBuster and extract the mpeg stream, then at leased you will know what you have got, maybe its an XVCD, SVCD, VCD who knows what it is, better to extract it and fix any problems before you try to write it.

You started the writer then went to bed ?, gosh what speed does it write at just kidding the program is obviously converting the contents to something else SVCD to VCD or XVCD to VCD, better to use other programs to do any conversions. Nero etc are rubbish at converting anything with the slightest problem.

  9. And since you had to overburn, maybe the cd came out bad because of issues with that--mine sometimes creates coasters when I can actually get it to attempt overburning.
