Ok, So one day I was looking at the Selfish Gene Theory and I clicked on a link that said...www.world-of-dawkins.com
I went to the software section and saw something I liked. I tried to download it and one of those internet privacy progies poped up. It said that Dll this program now to eliminate any internet tracks... and they have these nice newspaper articles (its amazing what people can do in Photoshop) saying how people are caught and arrested by downloading legal porn (o.O?)

I pressed the close button since it was bull and then this screen came up...
It stated that: Warning, no program detected and then It showed in the middle of the page my C:\ drive.
If i could post a picture i could because I did a screen Cap..
Then it said download internet privacy NOW!.

What I am concerned with is that, Is this a Hack? or rather an illegal tactic?

Depends, there is a way to use an iframe to display your disk C drive... but only you see it... no one else can. People used to use it as an excuse to try and scare you into buying security software. "See your in trouble! we can see you files!!!!" So if its an iFrame type thing then likely they are just cleverly trying to trick you into installing their software.

What you described matches what I'm talking about to the T.

  3. I have heard of this one many times before. Most of the time, its a little java script that pops open a window that looks at your C:\ drive. SUPPOSEDLY meaning "oh look if we can see whats on your machine so can everyone else". In those cases that data is visible ONLY TO YOU NOT THEM. Its like those little windows that you see saying things like "youre computer is broadcasting its IP address to the whole internet." Well, there is NOTHING you can do about that, thats part of the internet, the only way to stop it is to use a proxy then ITS ip is visible only.

Most of these companies try to trick users into thinking that their machines are wide open just begging to get attacked. The truth is, run a firewall(zonealarm is free and in my opinion the best), and an antivirus program and you should be golden. Most of the stuff those companies sell are junk at best. And some actually hurt you because they may have spyware, adware, or were programmed badly causing system instability. Or at very worse the program itself might contain a virus. Dont trust these little CO's. If you think you need any security software, be sure to get it from good sources.
