  1. Plays all svcds fine, some vcds.
Some vcds appear b&w and all jittery.
    Very frustrating. Any ideas?

  2. If you check the format of the jerky B&W VCD's I think you'll find that they are PAL (352x28 and not NTSC. I don't know if you can do anything with the 711 to output NTSC from a PAL vcd. You can watch them on your computer, though.

  4. I once had a Philips...great DVD player, sucky at SVCDs and VCDs. You are limited to a max bitrate of 2500 kbps. That and I usually rip a dvd to 3 cds so I got an Apex 703(got the 3 year warranty also). When I had the Philips I tried to flash the firmware but didn't help with reading any SVCDs over 2500 limit or fix the PAL encoded SVCDs. The processor in the player just cant handle too much. I came across a site once that offered to mod the board but I forgot where that was. To solve your problem you would need to transfer the *.mpg file in the VCD with a program like VCDGear(don't forget the gui). You can then use the file created as input to TMPGenc and reencode it to NTSC. Be warned though not to try to resize the movie. If it is a VCD just keep the size 352x240(??? I only do SVCD so check if this size is right). This should not take that long to reencode, < 10mins?? Anywayz this should help. Good luck.

  5. My US Philips 711 plays the NTSC, PAL, & FILM VCD clips on the VCDimager test disk ok. My TV is multisystem so I don't know if it outputs PAL on a PAL disk but I doubt it or my TV would probably ask me to tweek the channel settings.

  6. I am having the same problem with my Philips 711 DVD player when I try to watch VCD's. I have tried making vcd's from cue files, mpg, and iso and all of them get the same result: black and white picture and a continuous vertical looping throughout the entire film. I read all the other posts of this thread and I still don't understand how to solve this. Someone please help me!!
    Thanks in advance
