I know I am an idiot. I downloaded windows media player 9 beta and installed it a month ago. I can not go back now. None of my mpegs will play and neither will lots of my avis. It says that I am missing codecs. Any suggestions other than reformating and reinstalling.

Install other media players - like WinAmp that will play MPEGs, and DIVX Player for DIVX AVIs. WMP has always been a pain, even when not in beta...

  4. Go to Run then type:

    mplayer2

Hit OK and you're in business: good ole WMP 6.4.

  5. I've heard lately of a few systems blown up by Version 9. I'm with the last guy though, the old version of WMP is still lingering out there, although you have to search for it.
    Thanks,
    Greg

I'm not sure why people keep getting the new wmp... Microsoft hasn't produced a valid media player since 6.4. When they stopped focussing on playing media and focussed on controlling how you use it, monitoring what you do, and advertising like crazy... that should have been a sign.

    Stick with 6.4 (mplayer2)

we talked about this on other post. after you install wmp 9, if you uninstall any other software that changes the directshow filters you're screwed.

    there is two options-

1- microsoft's download page says that you should set up a restore point before you install(btw, wmp9 and certain other updates disables the restore points on "illegal" versions of windows) so you can go back.

2- reinstall windows, update to wmp 9, and only install software that you plan to keep.

if you don't believe me, check out the support on microsoft's website.

i think windows media player 9 is great.

You can still get 6.4 as a separate download. I have it. It works great.
