Yeah, I do it. (Except for movies I've downloaded, not ripped )

You can just use a photoediting program like PSP or Photoshop. Resize the canvas to the resolution you want (I make mine 325x288 for adding to my VCDs) and then put the stuff you want on it.

I make marqueeing text for my intros (which double-serve as a menu). So after the marqueeing text message, the menu page comes up. I do a frame-by-frame animation where I move the text x amount in one direction every frame, then save it as a bmp. I move a bit more, save as bmp. Repeat. Then I use bmp2avi to make the whole thing into a DivX video. From there I encode it into PAL VCD format, and if I want audio, multiplex it in with TMPGEnc.

I use VCDEasy to put the disc together. I set the intro/menu as the first file to play. As soon as you hit play, it starts. After the marqueeing is done, the actual menu comes up (part of the same video) with the options. I have VCDEasy set to only play it once, so it stays on the menu page until a selection is made (I have each video file numbered, pushing the corresponding number on the remote plays that video file). Turns out rather well, I must say.

If you wanted to actually combine the intro with your videos, rather than use it as a menu, simply make it the way I described then use TMPGEnc to join the two files together. Done.

    So the programs needed are:

    A photo editing program
    TMPGEnc
    bmp2avi

I am going to save it as a text file in case you change your mind, not make it a guide and it gets archived. Great post, LegionPC!!

All of them are free except the photo editing program you use.

You should be able to find VCDEasy and TMPGEnc in the tools section of this site. For bmp2avi go to www.divx-digest.com and grab it there.

Although you should be able to get a demo version of PSP, which will be unlocked for 60 days. That should do nicely.

    I personally use Photodraw 2000 v2 though.

If you want to do it in a slightly less labor-intensive way a lot of video editing software has the ability to generate scrolling/marquee text. Not sure if VirtualDub has a tool for it or not, but a lot of amateur home-video software has it so if some program came with your video capture device it might be worth checking.

  11. hi

i havent done an intro myself just yet, but i thought that the best way to do it would be in 3D Studio Max. u can create your animation much more easily, not frame by frame like in photoshop or whatever editing suite.

making text move is very simple, complex 3d animations are also very simple because all you do is move the object, and tell 3dmax that this is where you would like the object to go, and it fills in all the frames in between.

then, u can render the animation to an *.avi file(in 3dmax) and convert to mpg in your choice of encoder like TMPGenc or whatever.

when i have some spare time, i will try it out and share my results.

*note: 3d max is pretty easy to use, there are hundreds of tutorials out there on the net, u can make text move within about 5 mins. more complex stuff may take longer, but once u get the hang of it, its pretty easy!

I just finished a really nice intro yesterday with the frame-by-frame method. I would upload it for you to see, but its a touch big. Runs for 34 seconds with audio, and is 5.33MB (not really big I know, but when you don't have 5mb of webspace it is). For some reason if I compress as a DivX its larger than the original MPEG
