    Also I have dial-up so downloading divx movies from the net is out. Is their any program that would let me burn dvd's using only my cd-r and backup drive?

    None that I am aware of,

    CDRs cannot read the data of off DVDs, unless I am totally wrong here I think you are out af luck

    can you play records in a CD player?

    no.

    can you play audio tapes in a VHS player?

    no.

    so why would you be able to play DVD's on a CD ROM drive?
