  1. Hi all.

    I finally bought a Pioneer A04, and I want to stick some Japanese MPEG1s I onto a DVD-R/RW. (3 movies with a menu = cool stuff)

I used Bitrate Viewer to confirm that the MPEG1 was progessive (non-interlace), the resolution and bit rate were proper, and the framerate was 24.

I need to have MPEG1 with a framerate of 29 for MPEG1 on DVD. I also know about the requirement being 48hz.

With tmpenc I tried just re-encoding the video stream with the proper VCD template, only I selected the 3:2 pulldown filter under Advanced settings.

The result was a proper length MPEG1 with a framerate of 29, but the video looks like it's got some interlace lines when any motion occurs.

An example would be a person walking, interlace lines would appear where the motion occurs. Sort of every second line would show the old frame, and the other 2nd line would show the new frame.

I've been a long time troller here and am pretty patient with the search engine. I haven't been able to find a posted solution to what looks like interlacing from a progressive source using the 3:2 pulldown setting. I've seen topics on jittering and shaky frames, but not what I would call the same as what I'm seeing.

Any ideas? I want to burn a bunch of DVD-R and DVD-RW with MPEG1 and MPEG2, and head down to the FutureShop to try it out in a bunch of DVD players.

If I'm successfully, results will be posted on the DVD Player compatibility list.

    Thanks!

You shoudl use the "Filter" as a last resort, on the settings page their is an option 3:2 pulldown on playback. That is the options you want to enable. The "Filter" actually changes the video to introdecue telecine and doe snot just set the appropriate flag in the video.

If you were previewing on a monitor you will see the lines, on a TV you should not.

NOTE: DVD's support VCD video, all you need to do is re-encode the audio to 48.

  3. Thanks snowmoon.

DVDs do support VCD, but only at 29 frames and 48hz audio, correct?

Can I simply burn a DVD-R with 2 MPEG1s on it, 1 being VCD@24 and the other being VCD@29 and expect both the play back?

If I have a 24 frame MPEG1, I would need to convert it to 29 frames before burning it to a DVD-R with SpuceUp. (or similar product)

I used the 3:2 pulldown from the Settings, Advanced tab. So I shouldn't use this for VCD on a DVD-R, and just leave it at 24 frames?

Are you saying that the resulting MPEG1 I've got now with the wierd interlace looking effect will only look funny on my PC but not on my TV?

    Sorry for all the questions.

Not having one I'm not positive but DVD;s should support 24 and 30 materal.

    My understanding... yes.

You shoudn't use it AT ALL. There are 2 3:2 pulldown options in TMPGenc. One introduces interlacing into the materal ( what you did ). The other just tells the DVD player to introduce interlacing while playing it back for interlaced TV's.

Are you saying that the resulting MPEG1 I've got now with the wierd interlace looking effect will only look funny on my PC but not on my TV?
    Yes.

  5. Weird... I'm afraid to waste a DVD-R if I'm not certain the results will be compliant for DVD playback, but it would be a good test either way.

I'll just leave the 24 and 29 frame MPEG1s alone and give it a shot then.

    Thanks for the advice snowmoon!

One slight correction... the VIDEO is fine, but thaudio still needs to be converted up to 48.

  7. where exactly can I find the setting for 3:2 pulldown on playback in TMPGEnc? Thanks!!

  8. easydvd: You can only find the "3:2 pulldown on playback" if you're encoding as MPEG2. It'll be under the "Encode Mode" also don't forget to change the framerate to "23.976 fps (internally 29.97 fps)" if you're using "3:2 pulldown on playback".

  9. Thanks!! I don't do too much MPEG2, that's probably why I hadn't noticed it before.
