  1. I am trying to find some freeware for disabling macrovision. I found a few utils (for example DVD region-free - it works, but it has limited functionality, it is shareware). Does exist some freeware to be able to disable Macrovison ? (Region switching is not important to me). Thanks.

What do you want to disable Macrovision in?
In case of a DVD player for your computer, it will almost certainly involve updating the firmware.
In case of a standalone, it can either be done using some "hack" (entered using the remote) or firmware update, or (in some cases) some kind of "mod chip" or any combination of above.

  3. Above mentioned "DVD region-free" utility did not need any firmware change, I tried it with PowerDVD - and it worked fine !!! You can try it at www.dvdidle.com. There definitely exists some solution without involving DVD drive or videocard.

you might try searching for that.

I think macrovision is done by the player not the drive unit.

So try searching for PowerDVD + "Macrovision free"

change "powerdvd" to whatever you use.

  6. Actually, I believe Macrovision (at least for Ati cards) is done in the drivers and can be diabled through a driver hack, which I found a while back for my Radeon 64 ViVO, but haven't looked for since. It worked fine for that card.

  7. I have aHardware MPEG2 card by Utobia - hollywood plus and I used a piece of software that diasbled macrovison. I use the same software on my wifes DXR-3 hardware card by creative labs.

  8. Yeah,I believe I know which program you are talking about, you remember the name? I think what it does is replace the driver file responsigble for enacting Macrovision with a dummy file. Been a while though

  10. While macrovision itself resides on the video DAC processor board
of your computer video card or standalone video board, the macrovison flag
to activate it is on the DVD itself.
