  1. I am thinking of getting a new DVD player as my old Panasonic RV31K
    leaves much to be desired.

Being that many videophiles read this group, I thought I'd ask here
    for the best opinions.

Basically, I need a player that can do everything flawlessly...
Built-in 5.1 Dolby Digital Decoder, DVDR Playback,
    VCD,SVCD,XVCD,XSVCD,CVD etc.

I prefer to go with a reputable name brand.

I did some research and discovered JVC's XV-SA600BK

    http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL026936

The JVC player has many appealing features. Does anyone have this
unit? If so, what is your opinion of the XV-SA600BK? I haven't seen it listed at vcdhelp.com yet I assume it's a fairly new player.

BTW, I've heard rumors that the Panasonic RV31k can play Verbatim and
Pioneer DVDR media, can anyone confirm or deny this?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  2. I just bought the S300BK, which is a lower level version of what you're asking about... three steps down, actually... there's a 500 and 400 model too. I like JVC products and decided to go with this one. I bought the lower cost one due to budget and the fact that I only have an old 19 RCA TV to use. I know I won't be getting an HDTV any time soon, so I don't need progressive scan and the DVD audio.

So far, I'm happy with it. I've only had it for a week so far and have rented a few DVDs to play. The only thing I've noticed is that when there are scene changes where the screen goes black, the bottom half of the screen fills with white noise for a second. It's no big deal, just a slight anoyance. It might be due to my having to use an RF modulator to connect to my old TV... it doesn't have composite connectors, just the old coax adapter. If anyone is familiar with this kind of noise during scene changes, I'd like to hear about it.

VCD and SVCD... so far, so good. In fact when I brought it home I didn't have any DVDs yet so the first thing that went into my new player was an SVCD of a "Zoids" episode I had burned to a CD-RW! It played perfectly, which made me happy.

The SA600BK is the replacement for the (I'm pretty sure) SA70BK. There are some reviews of that here:

I paid $109 for mine at Sears. I'm on my way to the video store right now for a couple more movies to run through my new baby.
