i can't seem to find this but if i want to make a vcd or just save a dvd to my harddrive do i have to have a dvdplayer on my computer or can i use a cd rom or cd burner and what does this machine normally cost

You can make a VCD disc with a movie
you have downloaded from the internet, but not rip a DVD movie
yourself unless you have a DVD ROM player. They cost about half as much again
as a CDROM player but can also play the same media that a CDROM
drive can.

A CDROM player or burner cannot play a DVD disc.
There are some DVD combo's that double as a DVD player and
CDROM burner combined.
