Attention all Windows XP users.
Have slow ripping speeds i.e 1 X with a 16X DVD Drive
Check the following
Open up your Device Manager
Right click My Computer->Harware->Device Manager
Select IDE ATA/Atapi Controllers from the tree
I assume that your DVD drive is on the secondary master (2nd IDE port).
If it is on your primary IDE master do not attempt the following.
Double click Secondary IDE Channel
Properties will show up
Select Advanced Setting Tab.
I assume you know what device 0 or 1 your DVD Drive is.
If Not do the following
Go back to device manager and select DVD/CD-rom Devices
Double click on your dvd driveand take note of which location is stated in the general tab (0 or 1)
Now if your drive is set to PIO Mode Only in the browned out box and selecting DMA if avaliable doesn't change anything theres the problem. (No DMA)
Windows has changed the setting as drive may have experience read errors. (From ripping etc.)
NOW if you have the following problem, the following should fix it.
Please make sure you have set a restore point so you can restore if experince any problems.
Close all propertie windows.
Go back to device manager and select Secondary IDE Channel Again
Right click and select uninstall then OK
Restart you computer.
Once Windows loads it will reinstall the Secondary Channel as it detects your devices connected.
Go to the properties of the Drive and secondary IDE Channel and see if mode has changed.
*Note: When i completed this when i went to drive properties and made no changes it sayed i did and to restart.
After the restart all was well and back to 7-8X ripping.
If you experience any serious problems please restore you computer.
If this doesn't work try completely remove the device then reinstalling it.
Hope this helps as it helped me!![]()

Your method works fine for me, but I uninstall the primary IDE drive. Do you (or anyone) know why the problem keeps recurring? I have to uninstall the primary IDE channel about every 2 weeks and reboot (x2). If anyone knows how to keep it ripping fast without continually uninstalling, please let me know!
