    I have access to TMPGEnc 2.56 plus and 2.57 plus.
    Which should I use and why.
    By the way I have PowerDVD so codecs is no issue.

    I though 257 was better than 256. but they're both very similar in performance. Check TMPG's site for the change logs to find the exact differences

    For some reason I'm having problems opening files in 2.56 so I wanna know if I should try and resolve the problem or stick with 2.57??

    if 2.57 works -- stick with it .. quality is the same as far as i am concerned

    2.57 needs an external mpeg 2 decoder.

    all versions of tmpgenc needed an external decoder codec ... just that the 2.57/8 requires only 3 specific ones to use - none of which are free.
