backing up the film "training day" using ifoedit

i recently ripped training day(region2). and i found that the movie vobs amounted to about 5.5 gb.
i thought as there were 12 subtitles tracks and 4 audio tracks that i did'nt need i could get it down to 4.3 gb but after i stripped them, the vobs came out at 4.99gb!! so i lost only 500mb.
did i do something wrong? i stripped just 2 audio tracks and subtitles from the film "go!" and i got rid of about 500mb as well. so did i miss something with training day? has anyone managed to back it up on to 1 dvd-r?
oh, and has anyone backed up robocop(region2) to 1 dvd-r using ifoedit? i want to know if it's possible before i get a loan of it!

sorry m8 this seems to be a thing with films under 120mins.. not all will fit on a dvd even when stripped so re-encoding is needed... U have a few ways 2 go Tmpeg or Rempeg... look at the guides at doom9.net

I didn't rip Training Day but I have some experience with Strip Streams in Ifoedit. Usually by ripping the subtitles you won't reduce the size significantly. Also there is a difference in the space you save when you rip audio tracks. If the audio track is 6 channel then you'll be able to save approx 300 MB per track but when the audio track is only 2 channel then the gain is almost insignificant. For a normal movie (not some crazy DVD with 20 audio tracks) you save max. 300-500 MB by striping streams. In other words to cut 1 GB by striping tracks from a movie is a long shot. If you want to reduce in size Training Day further you should consider Splitting to 2 DVD-R with Ifoedit and set the last chapter which usually has the credits in the second DVD-R. This way maybe the remainder of the movie (without the end credits) will fit on one DVD-R. The second disc (folder) you can then throw away.

i found that i could not get the last 10 minutes of the film on a dvd-r so i put it on a vcd. very annoying when they don't fit. it had 12 subtitles tracks, 2 stereo audio tracks and 2 6channel tracks i did'nt need. so i thought i could have got rid of about 600 or 700mb at least! still i might try robocop about 15 minutes shorter and 4 6channel tracks on the dvd i don't need. it might work!

If you don't mind losing the credits you can use vobSplit to chop off the end of the last vob - this may get it to fit on one DVD-R.
Alternatively, just re-encode the last couple of chapters, then merge back the m2v files (with VobMerge) before remuxing.

I've done both these methods and they do work.

which film are you talking about? i tried vobsplit with training day and cut off enough info to make it 4.3 gb but there was still about 10 minutes of the film left before the credits. if i did use vobsplit for a film would the new edited vob work with the older ones? would i have to put it trough ifoedit and get the "vts sectors" or something?

Sorry, I was talking about movies in general re cutting the credits. I've not tried specifically for Training Day.
In answer to your question, you do not need to do anything else with IfoEdit if it is just the main movie. I haven't tested if you remux with IfoEdit back into the original menus. However, I wouldn't have though it mattered.
Re your problem, you could still just re-encode the last chapters to save time having to do the whole movie.

i can seperate the audio and video of a vob using vobraptor but what program do i use to mux them back together. i've tried tmpgenc, but it muxes them together as an mpeg file. what program will mux audio and video into a vob file?

Any authoring program like SpruceUp, Maestro etc.
If you choose to re-encode last coupla chapters, use can use VOBMerge (if I remember correctly) to join the video files together, then just import into your authoring program as a video asset.

first you should know that training day is a multi PGC movie. i've done it and kept the whole disc, including extras. i do not remember which audio i kept but i'm assuming it was 5.1 english and dir commentary. along with all hthe subtitles. just encode the video and be done with it. sounds to me like you are creating more headaches by trying to go a short route.
