  1. I was capturing some video from my Digital 8 Camcorder and made an XVCD and noticed some problems that I need some advice on.

I captured using Virtual Dub at 352x240 in uncompressed format and encoded to MPEG with TMPG at the same dimensions and 2500 kbit bitrate. I checked the original video and its fairly clear. But in even the avi capture it appears a little jagged in some places and the capture isn't as clear as I would have liked. There is a boat with a line down the side and the line is a jagged line rather than smooth.

What could I change to get a better capture and improve the detail of the video capture?

  2. Simple, increase the capture resolution.
Capture at 352x480, and keep it at this resolution if you want the same sharpness as your original video tape. You can make a non-standard SVCD with this resolution.

  3. So once I capture at that resolution then when I encode to MPEG I can change to 352x 240 as thats what I need for XVCD?

Once you reduce to 240 lines it will look about the same as your first attempt. try making an XVCD with a resolution of 352 x 480 and a bitrate of at least 2500 kb/s. when you capture at 480 lines the sharpness is way better.

  5. Well I accidently did that in a test Cd and the picture was tall and skinny rather than proper proportions.

Yes, but did you test the disc on your player? The player should stretch the image to the correct proportions.

  7. Hmmm....I tested in on WinDVD and sure enough it was correct then. But that didn't help me as my DVD player doesn't support anything other than 352x240. So I went out and got a new DVD Player that supports everything including XSVCD. It seemed everytime I turned arounf my old DVD was preventing ne from doing something.

Thanks for the help as now my pictures will have the clarity that I expect.
