dvd+r stand alone need help

i bought a stand alone dvd copier of my tv. It's the philips dvdr985 so far it works great when i copy my vhs movies but it won't let me copy my dvd's . If anyone knows a way to help me copy my dvd's i would greatly appreciate it!!!!

Not sure, but are you trying to copy store bought or rented DVD's ? If so they are encryped and you need a computer to decrypt them. If you are tyring to copy your home-made DVD's then sorry for wasting your time.

Yea there store bought. I just assumed that there was a way to modify the options on either the dvd+r or the dvd player that would bipass the encryption. If anyone thinks they know how to do this please let me know.

Think of the standalone as a "closed system" and the PC as an open system. The PC remains the most flexible avenue to backing up commercial DVD's with copy protection schemas.

If it is possible...it would need a hardware patch most likely...just like the audio recorders.

What would happen if you have a tv with monitor out video components, if you had the dvd player hooked up to the tv, and then hooked the recorder to the monitor out? The encryption can't get passed on past the tv can it? But then again, what do I know...

Even if it did work, then it is now analogue, before it goes back to digital. IMO, that defeats the purpose.

If you wanted to do this, it is probably cheaper to just get a video signal stabilizer, and output from a standalone DVD player to the standalone recorder with the stabilizer in between.

i tried to hook the dvd player to the tv and then hooking the copier to the out from the tv. But it didn't work. I was searching the web and i found a place that said if i wanted to copy cd's with dvd standalone recorder then i have to disable "macrovision." If anyone knows how to disable it please please please let me know i would be forever greatful!!!!!!

That is what the video stabilizers do. They basically massage the output so a Macrovision capable device doesn't "see" the characteristics of the Macrovision signal. Do a google search on video stabilizers.

Even a Macrovision-free DVD player as source would not solve the problem. The copy protection at work here is CGMS.

CGMS-free DVD players are extremely uncommon.

i've got a dvdr985 too. had the same problem. i was thinking i spent a grand on a dvdrecorder and i can't record backup movies from copyrighted dvds or vhstapes. previously i was using sima video color corrector to make backups on vhs. this setup did not work on the new dvdrecorder.....did some research. sweet!!! bought a homemade dvdfilter and IT WORKS!!!! able to make backups on the dvdrec from all copyprotected dvds/vhs. from player dvd you run svhs/composite video cables through the filter to the dvdr985 (should work with other philips dvdrec and panasonic dvdram). filter(does get hot) gets power from wall outlet . slambam thankyou ma'am, dvdrec no longer reads copyrighted disc. so record on! this guy sells the filter for 119, well worth it. email him for pic and other details. he accepts paypal. here's his email address:videofilter@cfl.rr.com
